 Job Summary 

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for supporting and providing design, analysis and costing for both new and existing electronic products as well as providing technical support for site and procurement functions globally. 

The incumbent in this position will leverage his/her expertise in Plastic, Metal, Casting, Stamp, Electronics and Packaging manufacturing processes to perform detailed design analysis and “should cost” recommendations and feedback on mechanical parts and assemblies to simplify, improve or otherwise reduce costs while ensuring the design that is both manufacturable and of high quality. 

The Mechanical Engineer will act as the senior technical liaison to support customers, Global Procurement and supplier technical teams to define mechanical specifications, design guidelines and provide technical recommendation to address and close on design issues. 

This position will perform mechanical tolerance analysis, plastic flow analysis, finite element analysis, and mechanical DFM and assembly design simplification recommendations utilizing both internal and external resources. Costing analysis based on a keen understanding of materials, finishes and manufacturing methods will be key to provide maximum value. Packaging design and PCB panel design are considered an asset. This role will establish and enhance mechanical design and box build assembly methods for both new and existing customers and provide effective cost approaches in order to meet/exceed product quality/coverage requirements. 

The Mechanical Engineer will also work closely with CMS (Custom Mechanical Services) to perform and assist with new and existing mechanical designs evaluations and DFM requirements. As the key technical Mechanical Engineer within Vexos, this position will also mentor/coach site personnel and manufacturing support specialists to ensure mechanical Box Build Assembly is performed with efficiency, error proofing and quality in mind. 

Activities will include design and implementation of assembly fixtures, improvements and related proof of concept designs utilizing 3D printing technology and mentoring co-op students to support on-going support functions and mechanical design requirements. This position reports to the VP of Engineering in the Engineering department. 

Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Develop and Define Customer Scope of Work to support Mechanical Design and Analysis Requirements. 
  • Establish Engineering effort and cost estimates and generate supporting Engineering Value Proposals 
  • Review customer documentation and qualify bill of material (BOM) structures, process for mechanical/plastic parts and the appropriate files required to support quote/procurement. 
  • Attend quote kick-off 
  • Perform Stack-up, interference and analysis of incoming mechanical parts and provide detailed analysis report and recommendations. 
  • Working with supplier and DFMA provide cost estimates and “should cost” to rationalize quotations and cost saving opportunities. 
  • Develop and maintain mechanical design guidelines corporately including global procurement supplier requirements for outsourced mechanical parts.
  • Working closely with our Metal Fabrication Operation provide Design for Fabrication input on new and existing business.
  • Working with Global Procurement Teams provide technical support to address/ resolve engineering queries and requirements to support sourcing.
  • Support Panel, Packaging and related 2D and 3D mechanical drawing needs/requests.
  • Evaluate customer Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), identify mechanical impact on tooling, provide cost/labor changes if applicable; implement ECO when all technical/cost related items are submitted and resolved.
  • Review customer mechanical documentation and qualify bill of material (BOM) structures, process for metal fabrication parts.
  • Set up and validate PPAP parts for customer’s products in conjunction with site personnel.
  • Create and update detailed critical/cosmetic inspection procedures, if not provided by customer.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering and multi-disciplinary team to optimize mechanical assembly flow and sequence of manufacturing process.
  • Mentor/Train junior manufacturing engineers, interns and technicians on best practices in mechanical design and provide additional documentation if needed.
  • Interface with customer and on-site engineering team to improve mechanical design and provide value engineering support.

  • Assist in evaluating and providing technical support to address NCM, PPAP and related supplier requirements.
  • Technical insight into supplier capabilities and requirements including “best fit” working closely with Global Procurement Management.
  • Establish a global supply chain servicing our regional manufacturing sites in die cast, plastic, metal and determine best fit for in-house/out-source requirements.
  • Evaluate customer Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), identify impact on mechanical requirements, provide cost/labor changes if applicable; implement ECO when all technical/cost related items are submitted and resolved. 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications 

  • Experience with software and hardware systems used in contract manufacturing: o SolidWorks and Cura (Latest Revision preferred) 
    • Boothroyd Dewhurst DFMA experience an asset 
    • Expert Knowledge of material and manufacturing methods – Stamping, Casting, Bending, Plastic injection, 
    • Tolerance Stack up and Interference Analysis 
    • PCB Panel Design and FAE 
    • Tooling and Mould Design 
  • Assembly Fixture, Test Fixture and related mechanical design.
    • Packaging Design experience an asset 
    • Process Experience in the following fields an asset – sheet metal forming, plastic injection moulding, hot stamping, ultrasonic welding, metal welding, die cast, metal heat treatment, plating, maching, material testing and prototyping

  • Completion of Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required 
  • A minimum of 5 years in Electronics/EMS or related manufacturing industry experience 
  • Preferred experience in an ISO environment 
  • Six Sigma, 5S and Lean background an asset.
